Nora Chovanec

Nora Chovanec
Photography Director/Dorm Counselor
Nora has a deep background in documentary photography, media literacy, and in using art as a vehicle for social change. Born in Virginia, raised in Oregon, and educated in Massachusetts, Nora has been photographing the world around her for almost 10 years. Creating documentary stories from Uganda, Ukraine, Mexico, and across the United States, Nora's photographic work relies heavily on moving past the assumption that photography should create simply a document of someone's life. Instead, she works to create intimate portraits of people and their relationships to their culture and community. Nora has worked with a number of non-profits, including a two-year program as the artist-in-residence at the environmental organization, Groundworks Somerville, where she painted community murals with students ages 6 to 18. She believes it is crucial for the upcoming generation of artists to make their art more accessible to the general public, to have a positive impact on their surrounding communities, and to help others tap into their own creativity, no matter their age or experience level. Currently she is finishing her fifth year of the combined-degree B.A./B.F.A. program with Tufts University and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA), Boston, majoring in Photography and Women's Studies. Nora is very excited to join Maine Arts Camp and cannot wait to have the kids get out there and start shooting!
